The Maas Method is
changing lives

Laurens is a Doctor of Integrated Medicine and uses his
unique format called The Maas Method to create bespoke
programmes for each and every client of The Maas Clinic.

What is The Maas Method?

The Maas Method blends a combination of both lab based Bio Physics (the science) and Functional Medicine (the nature) and addresses many ailments including the five common conditions of fatigue, depression, weight gain, hormone and digestive problems. Your best results are reached by assessing and restoring the three main body systems: hormones, digestion, and detoxification.

Bio Physics

Bio Physics provides analysis of your present health and wellness situation at every level. From atoms and molecules to cells, organs and even the effect of your lifestyle and environments, this data will even inform on future health issues if the situation remains unchanged.

Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine addresses the root cause of your symptoms and provides holistic natural solutions, treatments and lifestyle recommendations to harness the natural healing power of your body and restore and enhance your ongoing health.

“Our approach is 100% scientific, our application is 100% natural – a combination that creates wonderful and often life changing results."

The Maas Method takes your scientific data and after a detailed assessment creates a bespoke programme just for you.

We will advise you on the right food choices, correct supplementation and ideal lifestyle and outlook adjustments to ensure your success.

Your 3 main body systems and
The Maas Method in more detail

1. Your hormonal system

Your hormones act as the command and control system of your body and regulate energy production, fat burning, and your mood. Hormonal imbalances are common in people suffering from fatigue, depression and weight issues. Most cases of hormonal imbalance are the response to a chronic irritant or stress, whether it is emotional stress, physiological stress due to pain and inflammation, or dietary stress due to allergies or poor nutrition. In general, if the stress can be addressed with diet changes, correction of any inflammatory conditions and support for emotional health, the need for continued hormonal support is eliminated.

Stress and your adrenal glands

Your adrenal glands produce and regulate your stress hormones.

Normally, when the stress dissipates, the glands have time to rest and prepare for the next stressful event. However, if your stress levels remain chronically high, your body remains locked in a state of stress.

If your stress hormone levels remain elevated for extended periods of time, your body’s ability to recover is reduced, and the ability of your adrenals to make stress hormones will be compromised.

Under chronic stress conditions, the adrenals eventually ‘burn out’ and at this point, the adrenals become fatigued and can no longer sustain an adequate response to stress.

Stress hormone depletion also impacts the female hormones progesterone and estrogen, as well as the predominant male hormone, testosterone. Many women feel they are on an emotional roller coaster and testosterone levels in men also suffer.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue

The following symptoms can appear in both men and women:

  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Sweet cravings
  • Headaches
  • Diminishing sex drive
  • Low-level depression, often in otherwise emotionally healthy people

And in women adrenal insufficiency can also create the additional symptoms of:

  • Menstrual cramping
  • Infertility
  • Night sweats
  • Hot flashes

2. Your digestive system

Our physical health, mental health and general vitality rely heavily on the ability of our digestive system to breakdown what we eat and drink, and absorb these nutrients fully. These nutrients then fuel the trillions of cells that not only make up our body but keep it working optimally.

The foundation of good health lies in proper digestive function.

  • If you have healthy digestion you will feel energised and revitalised after a meal and for several hours after that.
  • If you have poor digestion and are not able to absorb nutrients fully, your overall health and wellbeing will suffer.

Your body needs to fully absorb all the vitamins, minerals, proteins and essential fatty acids from the foods you eat to keep you healthy.

Causes of digestive issues include:

  • Poor diet
  • High stress levels
  • An imbalance in the healthy organisms living in your intestinal tract
  • Parasitic infections
  • Bacterial overgrowth
  • Invasive yeast, often referred to as candida
  • Hidden inflammatory conditions

Did you know?

The majority of your immune system lies within your intestinal lining. The lining of your gastrointestinal tract is your first line of defense and if this defense is compromised by years of poor digestive function you will be more susceptible to the bacteria and viruses that cause irritation, infection and disease.

Sadly many people have experienced gastrointestinal discomfort for so long that they have adjusted to it and think that their system’s poor function is normal. It is not.

Symptoms that may indicate you are experiencing issues with your digestive system:

  • Bloating
  • Indigestion
  • Gas
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Cravings

3. Your detoxification system

Your detoxification system utilises key organs and pathways in the body, to neutralize and eliminate harmful toxins.

The world we inhabit today, creates a level of environmental, chemical and heavy metal exposure that is extremely taxing to our detoxification system.

Our bodies process toxins from a wide variety of sources every day, many being processed through the digestive tract and liver. Your liver is the centre of your body’s detoxification system. It is an amazing organ, responsible for filtering the toxins out of your blood, neutralising and then excreting them and despite all the work it has to do every day, the liver has an amazing ability to regenerate.

Toxins come from a variety of different sources add to the total toxic load on your body.

  • High-fat diets
  • Stimulants such as alcohol and caffeine
  • Sugars and artificial sweetener
  • Medications
  • Hormones and antibiotics fed to animals and end up in our food
  • Preservatives and dyes used in foods you eat
  • Metal dental fillings
  • Environmental exposure – what you breath in and expose your skin to
  • Everything you apply to your skin

All this additional pressure on the liver, mean it can become clogged, causing toxins to back up and recirculate into the bloodstream.

Symptoms that may indicate you are suffering from a toxic system:

  • Allergies
  • Asthma
  • Joint pain
  • Skin problems
  • Headaches
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Alcohol intolerance

Inadequate detoxification can:

  • Lead to accelerated ageing
  • Promote the onset of degenerative diseases

It is key to have balance in all these 3 systems as they interact with one another and irritation in one system, can result in another system being severely compromised.

Here’s an example:

  • If you eat food that you are reactive to, it will cause inflammation in the digestive system, impacting on normal digestion and absorption of nutrients.
  • This inflammation then generates a hormonal response, and as the anti-inflammatory hormone cortisol rises, immune function lowers.
  • You are then much more prone to infection and disease.

The tools we use to create your bespoke programme:

Lab testing and results analysis

Natural therapies have advanced to the point where we can now use the perfect blend of science and nature to create your personalised programme. Using a wide variety of tests and results from our in house clinic laboratory and some of the best labs in the world, we gather and analyse your unique data and then use this to inform and create your bespoke programme for ultimate health and wellness.

Lab testing results can inform wide
range of health concerns:

  • Allergies and intolerances
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Fatigue and burn out
  • Hormone imbalance
  • Nutrient deficiencies
  • Bacterial infections
  • Chronic health conditions
  • And many more

Diet and nutrition guidance

We will teach you what foods to eat and what foods you need to avoid. We’ll advise on when and how much to eat in order to maximize the efficiency of your unique biochemistry.

Supplement support programmes

The results from all your body systems will be reviewed alongside your symptoms and together this will help us decide on exact nutrients you are deficient in and what supplements will best support your transition to a healthier body.

The supplements we recommend:

  • are the highest quality products available on the market
  • are sourced from nutrition companies that only sell their products to physicians
  • contain only the purest pharmaceutical grade nutrients and the potency of each product is guaranteed
  • may include your unique blend of specific vitamins, minerals, herbs, natural plant-based hormones, and various other products.

Could I source these supplements myself?

Whilst purchasing products online from local health food stores may save money in the short term, the results can be inconsistent and not a successful as using the physician-only brands we recommend. You can then be sure of consistent results and that if a specific section of your programme is then falling short, we will know it is not the quality or potency of the nutrients that is slowing the healing process down.

Our recommended products can be bought from the clinic team or directly from our shop.

Exercise, lifestyle and stress management recommendations

Some people need more time with family, more sleep, or more connection to their spiritual life. The chronic stressors we all experience are often a major source of our health complaints and need to be addressed as part of a comprehensive plan to restore your health and optimize your wellness.

In addition to treatment, nutrition and supplementation recommendations, we will advise on the appropriate exercise programme for you based on strength training, stretching and cardiovascular exercise.

We will also suggest lifestyle modifications that will enhance your programme further.

  • Changes to your sleep patterns
  • Ideal daily water intake
  • Possible revisions to your work schedule
  • Stress management plans

This process and your personalized programme takes time, but with our ongoing education, support and encouragement and your daily commitment, we can work together to optimize your health and wellbeing now and for your future.
